Description of the guest lectures:

Which are the main roles of the museum in the learning society of the XXI. century? How does the museum appear as an ideal place for informal, nonformal and formal learning? How does the museum reach the different target groups? Which are the main issues of museum marketing and management in connection with museum education? The course answers these questions by examining the theory and practice of museum education and museum marketing.

1.)    Historical development of museums. Changing role of the collections/museums. The r ole of museums in culture and education; New tendencies in expanding functions of the museum. Museums and the postmodern/ learning society. Cultural and social roles of the museum today;
2.)    The educational role of the museum- theory. Learning theories/ strategies in the museum. Museums as places for lifelong learning. Museums and adult education.
3.)    The educational role of the museum- practice
4.)    The museum and interpretation. Telling stories trough objects and images. The Museum as Exhibition. Creating exhibitions for learning. Kinds of Exhibits, Design, Techniques, Labels; Museums on the Internet;
5.)    Museum marketing and management. Communication and Public Relations

Dr. Zsuzsa Koltai has 10 years of teaching experience in higher education. She has conducted courses in two fields since she started to work at the University of Pécs, Hungary. On one hand she conducts Hungarian and English language courses in museum education. Museum education is her main research area, she defended her Ph.D. on museum education in 2010. Secondly she conducts a number of courses in Cultural History. She has conducted two English language courses in the framework of the ERASMUS Programme for 7 years. (Lifelong Learning in Museums: The Theory and Practice of Museum Education; Cultural History of Europe) As a result of the European Student Mobility Programme she has taught students from several different European countries. She has also participated in the ERASMUS Teacher Mobility Programme. She gave lectures at diverse higher education institutions in Europe, such as the University of Duisburg-Essen, Essen, Germany, the Nicolaus Copernicus University, Torun, Poland, the University of Babes-Bolyai, Cluj Napoca, Romania and the University of Lyon2, Lyon, France.
